Why did the pipe start leaking?

The leaking cast iron sewer pipe had simply reached the end of its service life. Years of use had weakened the pipe, but another contributing factor was the way it was installed.

The piping was rigidly attached to the building structure. Although buildings appear solid, they naturally expand, contract, and move slightly over time due to temperature changes, settling, and normal structural movement. Cast iron is very strong but also brittle, and when movement is transferred directly into a rigidly supported pipe, it can eventually develop cracks or fail at joints.
